EL PASO - A local high schooler is bringing home another honor in a national competition.
El Paso-Gridley senior Rebekah Ehresman was recognized as the top senior girl in the state of Illinois for the high school Heisman.
The award recognizes excellence in academics, athletics and community leadership.
It's been a whirlwind few weeks for the senior since she heard the news. She says it's been incredibly humbling to win this honor.
And for now, she can't even wrap her mind around it, and is focusing on basketball.
"That would be an unbelievable experience. I can't even picture myself being there. I just, personally, I don't see anything special in myself, so that the fact that there's the possibility that could be me, that's just crazy,” said Ehresman.
The top 12 students from across the nation will be in New York City on Dec. 14 for the Heisman Trophy presentation.
