Extra Effort: Lemon Not Sour in Classroom

Extra Effort: Lemon Not Sour in Classroom

Walt Lemon, Jr. is this week's 'Extra Effort' winner

WMBD/WYZZ-TV - PEORIA, Ill. - Walt Lemon Jr. is one of the best examples of 'you can't judge a book by its cover.'

"Most people when they see me, they think I'm a mad person all the time," said Lemon. "That's really not the case. I'm playful and funny, but this basketball is serious to me."

His coach agrees.

"He does have that look, and from a distance it does seem like he is angry," said Bradley basketball coach Geno Ford. "He is just very focused."

Bradley's scoring leader puts the game face on in the arena. But it pales in comparison to his game face in the classroom.

"He has maintained a grade point average of near a 3.4. He's very low maintenance in the classroom," said Ford. "He doesn't have to chase him around, following through to make sure he is doing what he is supposed to do."

The senior says all that focus goes toward keeping a special person happy.

"I go just as hard in the classroom because of my mom. She is not going to allow me to get bad grades," explained Lemon. "If I get bad grades, I could be ruled ineligible. That's probably the main thing. I go hard on the court, and my mom makes sure I go hard in the classroom."

Thanks to his mom, the Braves are getting slam dunks on their report cards.

"Our team now has gone five straight semesters with above a 3.0 accumulated GPA," said Ford. "Which is the only five semesters it has ever happened at the university."

 With Lemon leading the way.
