Family Mourns Double Tragedy After Deadly Shooting

One man is dead after Saturday night shooting.
PEORIA - One man is dead, and another was left severely injured after a violent Saturday night in Peoria.

"If their aim was to cause us pain, they did that. They did that," said Malina Smith.

After her daughter was killed less than a week ago, Smith is now facing another tragedy.

"We haven't even been allowed to get over the shock of what happened to my daughter," she said.

On Thursday, Smith's daughter, 24-year-old KeiAmber Beard was killed in her home on Margaret Street along with her boyfriend James Irby. Smith's family is now reeling from a Saturday night shooting they say killed Beard's cousin, Melvin Sanders Junior.

"I watched him die. I don't know what to say about that. I don't know who would do something like that at a time like this," Smith said.

Just after 11:30 p.m., police responded to Smith's home on South Stanley Street where two people had been shot. One victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to the hospital. Authorities pronounced Sanders dead on the scene.

"It hurts so bad. Melvin had a girlfriend who was pregnant. He had a son that he loved very much."

Smith said Sanders had recently enrolled in a local program to improve his life. She said she hopes that one day people won't lose loved ones to the end of a gun barrel.

"That’s not gangster. It's not. You know, watching your kids grow up, getting to see your grandkids and appreciating life. That's gangster," Smith said.

Smith said the family is planning to honor Sanders at a vigil. They are still working out when that will take place.

Police have taken one suspect into custody in connection with the homicide. More details are expected to be released this week.
