FEMA, SBA Hold Disaster Assistance Meeting

FEMA says the number of people signed up for assistance is currently less than they hoped.
PEKIN - The deadline for tornado victims to sign up for federal assistance is still over a month away.

But FEMA says that their current numbers are lower than what they hoped.

That is why they're partnering the Small Business Administration and the Peoria Association of Area Realtors.

An informational meeting at Pekin's Avantis Some gave victims a chance to learn, step-by-step, the application process with a representative.

FEMA says there are a lot of misconceptions about applying for aid, but that shouldn't be stopping people from applying.

"I think there is a misconception that this is something hard," said FEMA Spokesperson Deanna Frazier. "'You're dealing with the federal government, and this has got to be a difficult process.' It is a fifteen , minute easy process."

The deadline is January 27th.

If you haven't applied, you can do so three ways:

Call 1 - 800 - 621 - FEMA

Head to the Disaster Recovery Center at 2200 E. Washington St. in East Peoria (The Festival of Lights Building).
