FEMA Still Waiting to Inspect Georgetown Common Apartments

Some victims receive aid, others still waiting.
EAST PEORIA – While FEMA works at its disaster recovery center in East Peoria, it’s still waiting for the "go ahead" to inspect Washington’s Georgetown Common Apartments.

Much of the apartment complex was left in ruins after the November 17th tornado.

The property manager said Tuesday that a lot of residents are hitting roadblocks when they register for FEMA. FEMA representative Deanna Frazier said out of the 179 Georgetown residents, 152 have already registered. As of January 2nd, 90 were receiving rental assistance, 41 were receiving help for loss of personal property and others were receiving assistance for vehicle damage. A number of others have been referred to the Small Business Association for a loan.

Still, many residents are waiting to receive grant money for personal property, but that can't happen until FEMA has inspected the buildings. Tim Tyson with FEMA said the property owner hasn't allowed inspectors inside yet.

Meanwhile, Frazier said a couple hundred tornado victims across Tazewell County still need to register before the January 27th deadline. People who have been denied may need to check in with their status.

“We want people to register so that if they are underinsured and there happens to be a shortfall, things that insurance doesn't cover like additional living expenses we can help with that, there are three types of assistance we help with," Frazier said.

She said some people who have been denied might just be missing information like a signature or insurance information. People can register in East Peoria's Festival of Lights building at 2200 East Washington Street. Tornado victims can also sign up Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 a.m.  at Menards and Walmart in Washington and Friday at the Menards.
