Fire Chief Urges Caution In the Cold

BLOOMINGTON - Cleaning up from the snowfall can seem like a never ending task, and Bloomington fire officials are encouraging people to take extra precautions around the house.
BLOOMINGTON - Cleaning up from the snowfall can seem like a never ending task, and Bloomington fire officials are encouraging people to take extra precautions around the house.

With temperatures up slightly, salt is starting to regain effectiveness, but Chief Mike Kimmerling says that doesn't ensure the driveways will be normal.

He says if you're clearing snow near your house, make sure to clear space for fire hydrants, so crews can get to them. He added any time they can shave off is helpful.

"The quicker we can do that, if the caps are accessible, it makes our jobs a lot easier and quicker to get done. But at a minimum, if we can at least visualize where it's in that snow drift, it really helps us out in an emergency,” said Kimmerling.

Kimmerling also recommends only using space heaters when you're in the room and double checking your carbon monoxide detectors.
