Fit Friday: Self Defense

Donnie talks to Joseph Walker from the Academy of Okinawan Karate.

At a moment's notice you may find yourself in harm's way.

The next move is crucial in this situation.

It's important to learn the proper techniques to train mind and body on what to do when the time calls for it.

"So, to get his mind off that, I'm going to hit him down here.  So, instead of thinking about punching me, he's thinking about his ribs."

This may only be a drill, but in reality...Situations like these are why many are walking through the doors of the Academy of Okinawan Karate for one thing.  Self-defense!

"The feedback I got from people is that they're really enjoying themselves, that they really feel like they can do it."

Instructor Joseph Walker is showing both men and women how to properly defend themselves if the time calls for it.  He says there is no need to be hesitant to learn proper training.

"When you drop it, drop it straight down...1,2, kickback...1,2, kickback okay?  That way you're coming from way backward

"Get off the fence, self-defense is like parachutes if you need it, you don't have it.  You're sure going to wish you did."

For many - they exit this course with plenty of self-confidence.

"Hands up, hands up, sun."

But, it's not easy...

"Ready go, punch it, punch it, punch it."

Actually it provides quite the workout.

"Physical conditioning is necessary, because not only do you have to know how to defend yourself, you got to be able to do it.  If you have the concepts, but you can't actually do the technique or you're to winded to do the technique, it's not going to do you much good."

Walker says how far you go is really dependent on you.

"What you want to do is find a method that works for you, to get in shape and stick with it."

In the end you leave with the feeling that you won't be the next victim, and that other feeling - compliments of a well executed workout.

Walker invites anyone who is interested to sign up for self-defense class, he says men and women who sign up -- leave with more confidence in themselves
