PEORIA - With the holidays approaching the fire department is reminding you to be safe when decorating with lights.
Reportedly one in every 40 Christmas tree fires is deadly.
When natural trees are not properly lighted, watered, or stand too close to a heat source, they can catch fire easily.
The fire department offers these tips.
Be sure to read the instruction before decorating and never attach more than two or three strands of lights together.
”Looking for any frayed incidents in the wiring, looking for your broken sockets, those kind of things. If they have fuses are properly working and things of that nature. Any broken bulbs, you may want to replace those,” said Philip Maclin, Chief of Fire Prevention.
They also warn to make sure the needles on your tree are not dry when you buy it.
And of course keep your tree watered and away from any heat sources.
