Honoring Our Veterans: Springdale Cemetery Holds Ceremony

A tribute to our veterans was held Sunday afternoon on Soldier Hill.
PEORIA – Central Illinois is honoring the millions of men and women who fight for our freedom each and every day.

A crowd gathered at Springdale Cemetery Sunday afternoon to pay tribute to local veterans.

A special program took place on Soldier Hill and featured local civil war living histories and music by the Peoria Barbershoppers.

Later, four veterans from four generations shared their memories and perspective on our country’s wars. The program coordinator said it’s important to never forget those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. U.S. Marine Corps Member Bruce Brown said, “Somebody has to serve. Somebody has to go. A lot come back, some don't. That's what we're here for today to remember all of those and pay honor and tribute to each and everyone."

Sunday also marked the 238th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. Following the program, patrons celebrated the day with a traditional Marine Corps cake cutting ceremony.
