ICC Offers New Recycling Certification

EAST PEORIA - A new program will teach students how to reuse and salvage building materials.

Illinois Central College is launching a program that will teach students how to keep building materials out of landfills.

Students can earn a "deconstruction and building materials salvage and reuse" certificate. The program was given a boost by a $500,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Labor.

While materials from last month's tornadoes have already been taken to landfills, this program can help in case of future disasters.

"A lot of these materials have already been removed from the site. So, we're probably not going to see a lot of those go back into the marketplace and get reused. But in terms of future planning, it really provides that opportunity to get those materials out of the landfill and get a second harvest, and really see them being used again for the new rebuilding project,” said Anne Nicklin of Illinois Central College.

The program includes four courses and will be spread across the entire spring semester. There’s still time to enroll in the program. Classes begin Jan. 21.
