PEORIA – WMBD 31 News is your local election headquarters.

Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka brought her “Common Sense Express” tour to Peoria Monday morning to announce her run for re-election.

Topinka has been the state’s Chief Fiscal Officer since 2011. In that time, she said she’s set a new standard for transparency and accountability.

She said she’s also been a voice of reason when it comes to the state’s overspending and borrowing. “Everything we've done I think has been very effective. In terms of making sure the public either made money, saved money, got paid. I mean right now, we're down to payments that go on July 5. That is probably the best that this has been in eons.”

Topinka is still pushing to merge the state’s Comptroller and Treasurer offices. The possible change would save the state an estimated $12 million a year.
