Law Bans Under 18 from Tanning Salons

PEORIA - If you're under the age of 18, you can no longer use tanning beds in Illinois.
PEORIA - If you're under the age of 18, you can no longer use tanning beds in Illinois.
A new state law bans younger customers from tanning salons. Governor Quinn calls it a step to protect the health of youth across the state.
Studies have linked tanning beds to an increased risk of skin cancer. Some people we spoke to say they have no problem with the law.

"I do think it's a good thing. I think that when someone is an adult they can make that decision. There are risks involved,” said mother Gina Jackson.
"And with their skin so sensitive at a young age, I think they'd be more likely to develop melanoma. And my kids will not be in a tanning bed,” said Kimberly Gillespie, mother of seven.
The bill also bans anyone under 18 from smoking electronic cigarettes. It will take effect on January 1st, 2014.
