JOPLIN, MO - In May of 2011, an EF-5 tornado hit Joplin, Missouri destroying nearly a third of that city and claiming one hundred sixty one lives. Mark Rohr was the city manager of Joplin at the time. He's written a book of what happened in Joplin. It's called Joplin - The Miracle of the Human Spirit.

In his book, Rohr details the first six months following their tragedy and how Joplin rose from the destruction. While all community challenges are different, Rohr says good can come out of bad things and getting everyone involved was a key to their success.

“One of the things that we found very successful in Joplin, find a way for everyone to participate.” Said Rohr. “Be it locally, for those peoplw who want to volunteer from other areas, send aid . National disasters bring out the best in people and it was important for us to fina way for someone to contribute if they wanted to participate to be part of the recovery effort.”

Rohr says it was important to get everyone involved, including citizens as Joplin developed plans to rebuild.
