PEORIA - Local disabled veterans are getting help to get on the go. The Military Order of the Purple Heart" in the Peoria area helps combat and wounded veterans get motorized wheelchairs. The organization has five available right now for disabled veterans. The scooters are donated, so the Order of the Purple Heart gives them to vets for free. It's their way to say "thanks" and take care of each other. "Some of them for some reason or another through the VA, they don't qualify for one reason or other. said Darrell Amerman, chapter commander. "And then some of them as they get older, the older gentleman and they get in a nursing home or so forth. mobility is very important." If you're interested in a scooter, or know a veteran in need, you can call Amerman at 7-1-3-3-0-2-9.
