NORMAL – A McLean County Unit Five educator and former Unit five student is making the grade in Illinois as a finalist for the ‘Teacher of the Year.’
John Bierbaum, a 2001 graduate of Normal Community West High School now teaches social studies at his alma mater.
He’s one of 11 finalists from across the state selected for the honor.
In his ninth year at Normal West, Bierbaum says technology is changing the way students learn.
With digital information now available at their fingertips, he strives to make lessons engaging, relatable and fun for his classes.
“Bringing that history book alive, that's a challenge and I just love it,” Bierbaum explained. “So I try to follow my nose to the opportunities in the community for my kids to get involved in and bring it to the classroom. Try to get them excited about learning about the community and the world around them.”
Bierbaum says he’s humbled by the honor.
The winner will be named at a banquet in Normal this October.
