McLean Co. Pet Owners Could See Registration Rate Rise

BLOOMINGTON - McLean County pet owners could soon see an increase in registration fees for their animals.
BLOOMINGTON - McLean County pet owners could soon see an increase in registration fees for their animals.

The McLean County Finance Committee approved a measure that could raise that registration fee by $2, after the pet is given its rabies vaccination.

The move, coupled with a $3,000 grant from the United States Humane Society will help the county continue its move to euthanizing wild or dangerous animals.

This additional revenue will help train staff handle the animals.

"We've always said with animal control programs that it needs to be self-supporting and it's the people who use the program who need to support it. So, that's part of the reason for the increase and we need to make those changes to move completely away from the carbon monoxide chamber use," said Cathy Covertson-Anderson, assistant administrator for the McLean County Health Department.

On Dec. 17, the county removed its carbon monoxide chamber. County officials say it had not been used since May.
