WMBD/WYZZ-TV - LAKE FOREST, Ill. - One more exhibition game, one more week to go.
Two Bears defensive backs with ties to central Illinois are down to their final week or training camp. Sherrick McManis and Tom Nelson are hoping to make the Bears final 53-man roster this weekend.
"I'm doing everything I can, it's all I can control," said McManus, a Peoria native. "My main focus now is to get better and show rthe coaches, my teammates that I'm here to help the team out."
McManis played his high school football at Richwoods and his colleg football at Northwestern. Nelson, from the Chicago suburbs, played his college football at Illinois State.
Both guys are special teams standouts, which might help them earn spots on the roster.
"Special teams, whatever they want me to do," said Nelson. "I'm a guy that can do a lot of different things and I'll do whatever they ask of me. That'll be my role."
The Bears play their final preseason game Thursday against Cleveland. Then have to make cuts to reach the 53-man limit by Saturday night.
