New Section Of Pekin's Veterans Drive Now Open

A new section of Pekin's Veterans Drive between Sheridan and Broadway is now open to drivers.
PEKIN – The city of Pekin is celebrating a new road expansion that’s been years in the making.

About a mile of Veterans Drive is now open to drivers. The expansion cost more than $6 million and runs between Broadway and Sheridan.

Mayor Laurie Barra said the project will open new doors for economic development. She said, “Especially around this corridor, I think you'll see more commercial development along here which is a boom for us.”

This is just one section of a major project that will one day connect Veterans Drive to Interstate 474.

Barra said the roadwork was paid for by a federal transportation bill and Pekin’s local gas tax.
