Normal Elementary Schools Gets New Distinction

A Normal elementary school will soon have some new services for families and students.

Thanks to a partnership with the baby fold and the united way, Fairview Elementary will now be a community school.

That means it will have extra support systems for families and students, with before- and after-school activities, as well as resources to help families find things like dental care, housing or other social services.

School officials say it's a great opportunity for both parents and students to get more out of their education.

“We're going to be able to bridge that gap to help the students come to school, ready to learn, ready to engage themselves and to excel academically,” said James Shaw, principal of Fairview Elementary.

Shaw says the school hopes to start offering its new services next week, once the new coordinator gets settled
