Normal Water Tower Slated For Repairs

NORMAL - The Town of Normal will be giving its water tower a bit of a facelift.

Town council approved a measure Tuesday that will start the process to re-coat of the inside and outside of the tower, located on the campus of Illinois State University near Willow and Main streets.

The price tag is about $700,000, but city leaders say it's important to make sure this gets done now, before it worsens. One big reason for the cost is possible lead paint that's on the outside of the tower, and that needs to be removed.

"And environmental regulations require us to completely shroud the tank when the material's being removed. This old paint's being removed, so it doesn't just flake off into the atmosphere,” said Mark Peterson, city manager.

Also on Tuesday, council approved plans for a new exhibit at the children's museum exhibit and named Quincy Cummings to the human rights commission board.
