Officials Stress Fire Prevention after Rise in December

PEORIA - Peoria fire fighters are warning residents to keep safe after an increase in fires this month.
December through March is the city's worst span for fires, according to Phillip Maclin, Division Chief of Fire Protection.
So far, a dozen fires and $400,000 in damage have taken place in December. The fire department says most of them could have been prevented.
This month kicked off the department's annual "Keep the Wreath Red" campaign. It's designed to raise fire safety awareness. But Maclin are worried some people are not getting the message.
"The problem that worries me is that if we stay on this trend. Again, winter season is the time where - like I said - our fires triple. Our fire deaths double. We are making the foundation for a fire death and we don't want that,” said Maclin.
Here are some tips to keep in mind during the winter.
If you use a kerosene heater, inspect them and only use recommended fuel.
Keep space heaters away from walls, furniture and any flammable objects.
Make sure your fireplace is put out before you go to bed or leave home.
And never burn charcoal indoors.
