Pekin Streets Convert After 60 Years

One-way streets change to two-way
PEKIN - Drivers in Pekin have a new traffic pattern to get used to.

Since noon on December 5th, the 300 blocks of South Fourth and South Capitol Streets run two-way traffic. The roads have been one-way for about 60 years.

Pekin Police Detective Mike Eeten said those two streets were originally designed to carry traffic more quickly into Pekin's downtown. Decades of changes have made them less important.

"We want people to be alert when they drive those streets. Obviously it's going to take some time for people to get used to. Our street department has tried to put up some precautions to try and help those people," Eeten said.

Those precautions include barrels down the middle of the road and extra warning signs. In the spring the island at Capitol and Broadway will be taken out.
