PEORIA - It might be known as the River City, but two other city staples have helped Peoria reach a new record as one of the top metropolitan area for exports in 2012.
Merchandise exports from the Peoria metro area increased by 17 percent in one year according to the U.S. Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration. Eighty percent of those goods are made up of ADM and Caterpillar exports.
Canada, Chile, Brazil are among the leading destinations for Peoria goods. That's good news for the economy in Central Illinois.
"Peoria is currently ranked the 18th largest metropolitan export community in the country and we're right behind Atlanta. So it gives size and scope to what exports mean to this community," said Shari Stout with U.S. Commercial Services.
Stout says that means better paying jobs for the people in the Peoria area.
