PEORIA - This holiday season, Peorians are celebrating rich African history.
Saturday, more than 100 people attended a Kwanzaa celebration at the Peoria Public Library Main Branch.
Kwanzaa is a holiday that honors African Heritage and celebrates family, community and culture. The free event featured festive colors, drums and other performances to celebrate the culture.
Participants say Kwanzaa is an important tradition to continue.
"I seriously believe that we have to go back to our roots,“ said Adam Alhassan. “It’s going back to our roots, to study history or science. The beginning of everything started from Africa.”
Kwanzaa started on Thursday and ends on January1.
