Police Offer Winter Driving Recommendations

NORMAL - The winter weather has returned to Central Illinois. The beginning of the snowy season means the end of normal driving on the roadways.

Normal Police public safety officer Amanda Street says, when winter weather hits, it's best to stay inside.

"If you don't have to be out on the roads, and causing problems for others, you'll make it safer for people that are out on the roads and for first responders that are trying to take care of the folks who need help," said Street.

But if you can't wait out the storm, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

"Stay off your phone, maybe even turn your phone off when you go into the car. Put it in your purse, put it in your glove compartment, so you don't have the temptation of being distracted by it while you're driving in the bad weather," said Street.

You also want to make sure that your windshield is completely clear of all ice and snow, and your lights as well, before you head out.

And if you've never driven in the snow before, it's not a bad idea to practice first.

"Do a little bit of practice out in a parking lot, give yourself a little bit of practice with the snow and icy conditions, where there aren't other people or property around," said Street.

Busy streets will be plowed first, but they could still be slick.

"Just because the snow is on the ground, you might have some traction on that, but be aware there might be ice under that," said Street.

And above all, use caution.

"If you feel like you need to drive a little slower and if you're on a two lane road, move over to the right lane," said Street.

The city of Bloomington has issued a city-wide order to take your cars off the street, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday. Normal's begins at 8 p.m. That’s so the plows can get through and clear the roadways.
