PONTIAC - One week ago, Pontiac lost one of its top police officers, when Casey Kohlmeier and his K-9 partner, Draco, died after their car was struck on interstate 55. Now the force is working together to move on from the loss.

The community said good bye to the community hero on Saturday. It's been a slow healing process for all.

Kohlmeier's absence has suspended the department's involvement with the Livingston County Pro-Active Unit.

Department officials say they've never been prouder to be part of the community, and the outpouring of love is helping them cope with the tragedy.

"We've made it through the hardest part and now, it's just time to start thinking about healing, moving forward and just getting our jobs done and making sure that the legacy that Casey’s left us lives on," said Jim Woolford, Pontiac's police chief.

Woolford says it may take up to a year to have a replacement for Kohlmeier.

The Illinois State Police Department is still investigating last Wednesday’s accident.
