Recycle Gift Wrap

The amount of waste in the US increases between Thanksgiving and the New Year.
The amount of waste in the US increases between Thanksgiving and the New Year.

That’s because gifts are being exchanged and all too often the gift wrapping goes straight into the trash.

Most items like boxes, tissue, and wrapping paper can be recycled.

Things that cannot be recycled include foil, ribbons, and bows.

One recycling educator suggests avoiding wrapping paper all together and using recycled shopping bags instead.

"Reduce before you purchase. So, making sure you're buying things with minimal packaging and then making sure that you're not increasing that packaging by adding a lot of wrapping paper and bows that are unrecyclable.  If you do wrap it, make sure you get the paper into the recycling bin,” said Rebecca Cottrell, a Peoria County Recycling Educator.

Other holiday items that can be recycled include Christmas lights.

Lowe’s accepts those during the holiday season.

If you get some new electronics this Christmas, you can take your old ones to the Goodwill for recycling.
