WMBD/WYZZ-TV - MORTON, Ill. - Sometimes a win in mid-January can catapult a high school basketball team to success in the postseason.
How about three games in mid-January?
"Really huge wins for us. Confidence builders," said Morton head coach Bob Becker. " Kids are believing. Still have to be consistent. I have a really special gound of kids and coaches working with. Competitve fire that I talk about a lot."
Becker has a right to feel good. His Lady Potters beat state powers Galesburg, Quincy Notre Dame and U-High in a three-day stretch this week.
Defending champion QND hadn't lost to a team from Illinois in three years.
"I think it really motivates us to keep going," said senior guard Kait Byrne. "Those are definitely post-season opponents that we could run into. High caliber teams and playing close games that helps us."
Monday night's win at U-High avenged a loss to the state-ranked Pioneers in last month's State Farm Classic
"We're coming together as a team," said sophomore guard Chandler Ryan, who scored 23 in Monday's win. "We know we can do it, and know we are one of the best teams in the state, so were working together right now. Really boost confidence a lot."
