Renter’s Insurance for College Students Recommended

PEORIA HEIGHTS - Among the hustle and bustle of college move-in day, insurance agents say a lot of students forget about renter’s insurance.

With all the stress that comes with moving into new dorms and apartments, new or returning collegiates might not think about a renter’s insurance policy to cover all their belongings.

American Family Insurance agent, Stan Edmunds said it's one of the cheapest policy people can get, around $130 a year. For many young people in dorms, he said their parents’ homeowners insurance will include them for free.
Edmunds said major risks for college students are theft and fire, but there's another aspect that protects students, too.

"Something most people don't consider, but what if as an example that person caused the building to catch on fire. They did something, their liability, the minimum liability under a renters policy is $300,000," Edmunds said.

Edmunds says where there are a lot of people living in the same space college students can't be too careful.
