WMBD/WYZZ-TV - LAKE FOREST, Ill. - One month into preseason camp and Sherrick McManus can feel the NFL grind.
"It should be a grind," said McManis. "This is where team building comes along. This is where you start your fouondation as a team. That's what we're doing."
McManus is in his fourth NFL training camp, his first full one with the Bears. Houston dealt the Peoria native to the Bears last Aug. 31.
"It's a blessing to get traded to the home town team, the team I looked up to when I was younger and coming to such tradition and a great team as well," said McManis.
He made an impact on special teams last year, blocking a punt which led to touchdown in the Bears win at Tennessee. And he's already forced and recovered a fumble against Carolina this preseason.
"Any time you make plays, you're taking a step," said McManis. "Those steps are never over. My goal is to get better."
McManus played his high school football at Richwoods, his college football at Northwesrtern. And is trying to earn a spot on the Bears roster so he can play his NFL football in his home state, too.
"I'm doing everything I can control," explained McManis. "My main focus is to get myself better and show the coaches and teammates that I'm here to help the team out."
