Salvation Army Hands Out Christmas Baskets

PEORIA - A local ministry spent the day helping families put something special on the table for Christmas.

The Salvation Army of Peoria gave out 3,000 Christmas baskets to families in need on Monday.

Some of the boxes were delivered over the weekend, but hundreds of families waited in line to pick up the remainders today.

Each container has the makings of a holiday feast, including a ham and side dishes.

It's been a tradition for more than one hundred years and it's one that organizers say never loses its significance.

"I think it's pretty big, especially on a cold day, like today. You think of people that have to scrounge around and find coats, find meals and things like that for their families at Christmas time. So, it's nice that we're able to partner with other folks to be able to make this a reality, so that people can have a nice holiday meal,” said Rich Draeger, assistant development director for the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army will be getting a big boost to its end of the year Red Kettle Campaign.

Zarafel Industries told the organization it would be matching donations of at least $10,000 over the next couple of days.
