School Enrollment Down Following Wet Spring

LA SALLE COUNTY– Enrollment at Marseilles Elementary is down this year, due in part to flooded homes.
LA SALLE COUNTY– Enrollment at Marseilles Elementary is down this year, due in part to flooded homes.

The district says local families chose to walk away from their properties--after receiving damage estimates.

Some homes near the city dam are now vacant, while others are still being repaired.

Dozens had to be gutted, with furniture and appliances completely replaced.

Mathew Johnson, a foreman says if he hadn't given his friend a discount, she'd have to leave her house too.

“This house doesn't even appraise for $80,000.  So when you get a bid that's $80,000 and you have a home that's only worth $60,000 it's really hard to take and repair that,” Johnson explained.

Many admit neighbors admit, they didn't have flood insurance.

Until this spring, the city dam hadn't overflowed in 80 years.
