Shelter Concerns: Demand for Affordable Housing on the Rise

BLOOMINGTON - A conference focused on creating affordable housing for those in need, is working to balance bigger numbers with current funding.
BLOOMINGTON - A conference focused on creating affordable housing for those in need, is working to balance bigger numbers with current funding.

Housing Action Illinois partners with non-profits like Mid Central Community Action in Bloomington to help those searching for shelter and on the verge of homelessness.

Organizers say since the housing market collapse, the demand for homes has skyrocketed.

Each year the statewide coalition meets with community agencies in hopes of expanding the availability and quality of affordable housing throughout Illinois.

“It's so important these practitioners have up to date information about federal and state programs, best practices, and they have a chance to network with each other so that when they come back to Illinois communities they can serve the families,” said Housing Action Illinois Executive Director Sharon Legenza.

Leaders say a stronger Illinois begins at home.

Those with a roof over their heads can focus on the road to recovery, like finding a job, or enrolling in school.
