Soup Luncheon Continues Music Teacher's Legacy

BLOOMINGTON - Lunch time at Sheridan Elementary School warmed up its teachers and will help give back to their students.
BLOOMINGTON - Lunch time at Sheridan Elementary School warmed up its teachers and will help give back to their students.

It's the Bloomington School's eighth annual soup luncheon, set up in memory of beloved music teacher Ellen Smith, who died of cancer at a very young age.

The lunch has grown over the years, and now all teachers bring in a dish and donate money to the Ellen Smith Fund, and The American Cancer Society.

That fund allows the school to bring in musical performers and keep smith's legacy alive.

"A lot of our kids don't have a chance to go to concerts on a regular basis. So, this is a really easy way for us to bring in outside groups to give them exposure to outside opportunities,” said Leah Crews, music teacher for Sheridan Elementary.

Crews says this year’s luncheon raised $246. It also brought back many retired members of the staff, who contributed and socialized. More than 41 teachers attended.
