State Farm Eying Move South For Claims Jobs

State Farm currently has about 15,000 employees working at its Bloomington headquarters, but the company told its employees this week that changes could be coming.
BLOOMINGTON - McLean County's largest employer could soon be shifting some of its workforce south.

State Farm currently has about 15,000 employees working at its Bloomington headquarters, but the company told its employees this week that changes could be coming. The company is developing regional hubs in Atlanta, Phoenix and Dallas.

Company officials declined to do an on-camera interview, but spokeswoman Holly Anderson said this is in a statement," This week, we shared with our employees updates to our business model that will support our continued growth as the ‘number one’ personal lines insurer. While these updates to our business model will likely re-align individuals providing claims services from the Illinois Operations Center, long-term plans for job functions and the facility are still being studied. "

While the transfers would likely take place in the claims department, the company won't disclose figures, citing the competitive nature of the industry.

Ken Springer has worked for the community economic development council for eight years, and he says this kind of shuffling is normal.

"It means state farm is taking a look at their business model and they're determining what makes the most sense for them in the long term. And if they feel the need to shift some divisions around, that sounds like what they're doing," said Springer.

Springer says losing too many jobs could hurt the area.

"Any time you have a loss of jobs, that's a negative impact on the community because if you think about it, it's families that aren't going out to eat, not going to museums on Saturday, not putting gas in their car," said Springer.

Springer says the community needs to look for more ways to grow, but state farm has given the council every indication that Bloomington will remain its headquarters and be a part of the community.
The company confirmed that Friday saying, "Our headquarters remains in Bloomington, IL and we expect to maintain our very large presence here."
