Illinois State Police are reminding motorists to make safety their number one priority while driving over the Labor Day holiday weekend. The upcoming weekend is one of the busiest driving periods. Locally, District 8, which serves the Peoria area continues to see a large number of motorcycle fatalities. Troopers will be paying close attention to motorcycle riders and motorists who disregard motorcycle rider's right of way. Troopers will also be working hard to take impaired drivers off the roads. If you plan to consume alcohol, police say designate a sober driver so everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend. Law enforcement officials will also be conducting roadside safety checks. Last year, Illinois State Police issued 2651 tickets for speeding during the holiday period. Troopers will have zero tolerance when it comes to reckless and irresponsible driving behavior.
