State Police: Motorcycle Deaths up in 2013

GERMANTOWN HILLS - Four people died in car crashes over the holiday weekend, down from 15 deaths last year at the same time. Police say this year has been a different story for motorcyclists.

Seven people died in motorcycle accidents last year and nine have died so far in 2013. State police say there are more motorcycles on the road today and that drivers and bikers need to be extra careful.

Illinois State Trooper Dustin Pierce said there are a few reasons that contribute to these deaths.

"Impaired driving has been a factor. The majority of the fatalities, they were not wearing helmets. We always recommend you wear proper riding gear, including a helmet when you're getting out there on a motorcycle. You don't have much protection and you want to be as protected as you can be when you're out there," Pierce said.

According to state police, more than 80 percent of motorcyclists killed last year were not wearing a helmet.
