PEORIA - A government assistance program for low-income mothers and pregnant women is continuing in Peoria County, despite the federal shutdown halting the program’s national funds.
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, or WIC, will continue locally.
The program provides nutrition education and food assistance to new moms and their kids under the age of 5 years old.  Last week, USDA said no new funding will be available until the shutdown ends. But the Peoria City County Health Department says the current funding cycle allows it to keep the local program going. Curt Fenton, child and family health director, says many in the community cannot afford the program to close.
“The food supplementation we provide would be immediately missed if we weren't able to provide that and that is something that we hope doesn't happen,” said Fenton.
WIC serves more than 4,500 people in Peoria County.
