Taking Action for Troops: Operation Santa Season Underway

BLOOMINGTON - Christmas is still months away, but members of Operation Santa are hard at work collecting holiday cheer for troops overseas.

The organization makes hand-made stockings and fills them with goodies for soldiers at Christmastime.

Members hope to send at least 20,000 of them to deployed service members this year.

That's why shoppers could find Operation Santa stationed at the Bloomington-Normal Wal-Mart stores Sunday.

From 10 am till four volunteers manned the doors collecting items, hoping to make a difference for those who serve.

"I’ve spent one of my Christmas’s overseas and that's got to be the hardest time,” said volunteer Bradley Nauman.  “To be deployed while you're in the military."

"We had a child for their 10 year old birthday party did not ask for gifts they asked for people to bring things for our stockings here in Bloomington-Normal.  That is just amazing,” added the group’s secretary of operations Chris Metz.

Since Operation Santa began nearly eight years ago, more than 200,000 stockings have been shipped overseas.
