All month, students have been preparing for their assembly, by creating artwork about veterans, and learning why freedom isn't free.

Monday’s ceremony featured dozens of family members and veterans.  The students also took part in a patriotic ceremony where they explained why they're grateful for all that's been done for them. The kids and their families sang songs and had an Honor Guard display the colors and teach about the history of the flag.

"I’m learning that veterans are really important because if it wasn't for them, we would not be able to do what we do today, we wouldn't be free,” said Ella Bittner, fifth grader.

"It's very, very meaningful. It's very touching to see kids handing us these flags and singing for us. It's just a great day. It makes you feel really good,” said Scott Flack, a retired E5 in the U.S. Navy.

Everyone who attended the ceremony walked away with an American flag and a piece of pie.
