BLOOMINGTON - A local charity is in a race against time.
Home Sweet Home Ministries needs to collect 1,000 turkeys for the needy this Thanksgiving, but so far it’s about 970 birds behind.
In October, the organization kicked off its annual holiday campaign called "Give Thanks."
Home Sweet Home Ministries, which provides food, shelter, and hope to the needy says its numbers have skyrocketed this year.
While the exact cause is unknown, staff members say economic factors like job cuts, rising costs of living, and reductions in the food stamp program have led more people to come through its doors.
To ensure everyone celebrates Thanksgiving, it desperately needs turkey donations.
Home Sweet Home Ministries is holding collection drives at area businesses next week.
Those include the Cub Foods, Kroger and the Hardees restaurant in Bloomington.
