PEORIA - Nearly 1,300 faculty members work at the University of Illinois College Of Medicine. Most of them are volunteers.
Wednesday, the College of Medicine honored more than 60 of its faculty for their extraordinary service. More than 1,000 faculty members volunteer their services. Most of them work as doctors or are retired.
The school says they are vital to teaching the next generation of medical professionals.
"This system is very much dependent on the volunteers. They are held together by a dedicated group of core faculty, but without our volunteers we wouldn't be able to operate the school," said Dr. Sara Rusch, Dean of UICOMP Peoria campus.
"The very first physicians, from the time of ancient people, it's always been a charge to be a teacher. And a doctor and a teacher are intertwined," said Dr. Gregory Tudor, volunteer faculty.
The program took place at the college's Peoria campus.
