NORMAL - School District Unit Five of Mclean County is taking to the phones to test the viability of a proposed county wide sales tax.
NORMAL - School District Unit Five of Mclean County is taking to the phones to test the viability of a proposed county wide sales tax.

Starting next week, the district will have a marketing company survey 400 random people from the Unit Five area, as well as 100 people from District 87, plus 100 other people in McLean County to gauge interest in the tax.

The district is looking at either having two expanded high schools or adding a third. School leaders say it's going be an important factor in decision making.

"It's a survey that's fairly extensive. It has good results, it does a little bit to help us have a better idea where we got with the idea of putting it on the ballot or not,” said Dr. Gary Niehaus, superintendent.

Niehaus says, if the survey goes well, the school board will vote on whether or not to put it on the ballot next year. The vote on the sales tax issue itself would take place on primary election on March 18.
