Uptown Normal Ready For Big Addition

NORMAL - The town of Normal is getting ready to make a big addition to its Uptown Circle.

Normal has secured financing for a new $35 million building project downtown. Many of you have seen the giant hole in the ground for about four years, but city leaders say crews will begin construction on a Hyatt hotel and 35-40 luxury apartments in November. There are also plans for a spa and a restaurant to be added to the area.

City leaders say the project will bring more young professionals to the area and will direct more traffic to other businesses.

"We think this project will actually attract additional commercial development interest on other sites within Uptown. So, it's a very important project and we're thrilled to see it move forward,” said Mark Peterson, city manager for Normal.

The city took out a 20 year bond for the project, which will be paid back from tax increment financing, as well as hotel, sales, and food and beverage taxes.

Peterson says he expects the work will be completed by spring of 2015.
