Wicked Wind Chills Help Keep Streets Clear For Plows

The streets in Bloomington have stayed relatively quiet since Sunday's snow storm, and that's been music to the ears of Mayor Tari Renner.
BLOOMINGTON - Wicked wind chills have kept many people inside their homes since Sunday. And for snow plow crews in the Twin Cities, that's been helping them clear the roadways.

The streets in Bloomington have stayed relatively quiet since Sunday's snow storm, and that's been music to the ears of Mayor Tari Renner.

"In some degree, that was almost, in a sense, a blessing because it's kept people in their homes and off the streets. We've had very, very few calls for service and very few accidents, given the kind of weather and snowfall we've seen," said Renner.

The first weather-related accident didn't occur until Monday. That's freed up city plows to focus on keeping the main roads as clear as possible.

"This has really been a potential crisis and I'm so proud of our public service workers and our department heads," said Renner.

Renner says the crews have worked tirelessly to keep the streets free of snow, and give drivers some traction.

"Even when the IDOT stopped plowing Veterans Parkway, we kept going because we wanted to keep control of them and now we're moving on to the 2nd and 3rd tier roads and the culdesacs," said Renner.

Plows have stopped dropping salt on the roadways because it's ineffective. And city plows aren't sure if they'll be able to use it by Tuesday either because of the extreme cold.

But there's still a lot of other work to be done, and Renner says residents can help.

"When you see some places that are not very well plowed, it's because we've got cars on the streets. We can't plow them and we don't want to tow you," said Renner.

City offices in Bloomington and Normal were closed Monday. They expect to re-open Tuesday.
