Cold Turkey: Blast of Cold Air to Hit Central Illinois Around Thanksgiving

The first two weeks of November have proven to be colder than average for the northern U.S. Thanks to a few strong Canadian cold fronts and arctic air masses, parts of the northern plains saw subzero temperatures last week, which for some locations was the coldest they've been this early in the season.

With the exception of a few "mild" days, it has been a chilly start to November in Central Illinois. Most of the region has experienced temperatures that have been well below average during the first few weeks, and it looks like this trend of cooler weather will continue through the week of Thanksgiving.

A blocking high pressure system located near Greenland, often referred to as the "Greenland Block" or the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation, will send cold temperatures diving south in to the Midwest and the eastern U.S. for Thanksgiving.

Long range model forecast suggest that after a few seasonally mild days this week across Central Illinois, colder than normal conditions will return next week. By Thanksgiving, high temperatures may only reach the mid-30s through the end of next week.

Now, while the cold temperatures will be in place there is no obvious sign of accumulating snow in the forecast...at least not yet. Peoria's mean 1st measurable snowfall date is November 23rd while the mean date of Peoria's 1st snowfall of an inch or more is December 11th. While accumulating snow may not occur in the next week, it wouldn't surprise me if parts of the region see it's first snow before the end of the month.
