Much Needed Rain is on the Way

It's no secret that Central Illinois is in need of rain. In fact, much of the region has a rainfall deficit of 2-4 inches since August 1st while Peoria officially sits about 2 inches below average on rainfall for the year. Now, it appears a stalling cold front may bring the region some much-needed rain!

October is definitely a month of transition in Central Illinois. Average high temperatures at the start of the month are in the lower 70s but fall in to the upper 50s by Halloween. Now, it looks like we'll see a transition from abnormally dry conditions to a wet weather pattern over the next few days.

Central Illinois is currently under "Abnormally Dry" drought conditions with "Moderate" drought conditions across southern portions of the area. A slow moving storm system is expected to move in to Central Illinois Wednesday, bringing periods of rain to the region through the end of the week.

Storm Set Up

A large trough currently located over the western U.S. bringing cold temperatures and snow to parts of Montana, Wyoming and, Colorado is expected to split in to two pieces. The first piece of energy will send a cold front through Central Illinois on Wednesday. The front will stall across the region which then be the focal point for additional showers and storms through the end of the week. The second wave of energy will come through Friday in to Saturday resulting in what looks to be a pretty wet Friday and Friday night for the area.

Lingering showers and thunderstorms may continue to impact Central Illinois through Saturday morning with improving conditions Saturday afternoon. When it's all said and done, rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches look likely across the area with most of Central Illinois expected to receive at least two inches of rainfall.

Behind the front, cooler temperatures will filter in. High temperatures will sit in the low to mid-70s from Wednesday through Sunday. High temperatures may struggle to get out of the 60s early next week as another storm system sends another round of cool air towards the region.
