PEORIA, Ill. — As fire crews investigate multiple fires in the area, department leaders are sharing ways you can prevent a fire from sparking in your home.
The causes of recent fires are different, but many fires are preventable.
Paying attention to your surroundings and teaching kids fire safety are helpful things to keep in mind.
In the summer, you can also take precautions based on the season. Those with the Peoria Fire Department say the cause of fires changes depending on the time of year.
“It depends on the season. Sometimes, different causes for different times of the year. Of course, in the winter time, we find people using alternative heating sources, and in the summer, a lot of times, we’re looking more towards the barbeque grill,” said Division Chief of Operations James Bachman.
Other common causes of fires in the summer are air conditioning units and improper electrical cord usages.
Bachman also says it’s a good idea to check your fire extinguisher and smoke detectors every six months.
