Social Security scams on the rise in Central Illinois

CENTRAL ILLINOIS — If you’ve gotten a call from the “Department of Social Security Administration” explaining your social security number is suspended, you’re not alone.

Police departments across Central Illinois are getting reports about this scam. Watch the video above to hear what it sounds like.

To avoid becoming a victim, there are some things you should know.

  1. The Social Security Administration will not usually contact you by phone, if you ever get a call like this, go to your local social security office.
  2. Never reveal personal information over the phone or email
  3. Never send money to anyone you’ve never met face to face
