PEORIA, Ill. — The family of Wonderful Wally and Chillicothe police got to preview the First Responders Hero Room in the Peoria Ronald McDonald House Thursday.

Wally Bastian is the Chillicothe boy that underwent two open-heart surgeries and an open heart transplant. The Bastian’s spent a large amount of time in the Ronald McDonald House in Chicago while Wally was in the hospital. Alex Bastian called the preview overwhelming.

“To see the differences and the upgrades and stuff they’re doing for this one and to know it will be used for something amazing, it’s great,” Bastian said.

The First Responders Hero Room will include many patches, badges and hats honoring local heroes in the community. Chillicothe Police Chief Scott Mettille is excited for all the people the room will be able to help.

“The most overwhelming thing, and the heartening thing, is all the family’s it’s going to touch,” Mettille said.

Construction on the Peoria Ronald McDonald House should be completed in November, and it will be open in December. You can visit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois website to find opportunities to volunteer or donate.
